Error Parsing | “I couldn’t believe the number of errors and junk it found in my system! Thanks for great recommendation.”  Errors in a PC are inevitable. Error parsing is done to fix bugs by passing each line of output produced by the PC through several successive Error Matcher objects. Each Error Matcher corresponds to a different style of error message and holds onto three regular expressions – errors, warnings, and extra lines to repair any problems faced by Windows. If the output of a line is equivalent to an error pattern, then file name, line number and error message are extracted from it; if not, the line is then optionally matched against another regular expression to determine if it is a warning and fix the problem.

Error Parsing allows for specification of filename by an error pattern of “$f”, where the current buffer’s path is used; otherwise, the filename is resolved relative to the current directory in Windows. An “extra” regular expression can also be specified, against which lines subsequent to an error are checked and added to the error message if they match. This can be used fix compiler errors and warnings which span over several lines. Warning messages and parsed error are shown in the Plug-in>Error List>Error List window.

Error Parsing also checks for Console plug-in includes error patterns that match errors produced by several tools. To mention, generic errors matching the following format produced by many tools, especially on UNIX: file:line:message. Generic errors matching the so called “Emacs” format: file:start line: end line: start column: end column: message can also be fixed and the PC repaired for errors in Windows files.

Error Parsing facilitates the detection of jikes by Java compiler which produce errors if given if the +E command-line option. Otherwise, errors would be shown in a non-standard format which cannot be parsed by the Console plug-in. Errors output by the java compiler found in Java 2 version 1.3 and later are also detected. Earlier versions are compatible as they output errors in the generic format documented as above. Error Parsing allows for error pattern modifications in the Console>Error Patterns panel of the Global Options dialog box.
